As a follow-up to my last post about entertaining, I wanted to breakdown the anatomy of a perfect charcuterie board for those of you who are newbies to them!

First, grab yourself a board. A cutting board, slate cheese board, or even an oversized plate or tray will do!
Then I like to start with the cheese. At least three different kinds, bare minimum in my opinion. Here I have sharp cheddar, soft swiss, and havarti cut into stars. Most of the cheeses will go atop crackers so don't be afraid to have a little fun and cut shapes with mini cookie cutters like I did.

Next I like to add a couple small bowls for either nuts or spreads. For this particular board, I wanted spicy mustard but I also love to have hummus or jam sometimes too.
Next, add in your meats. Here I have sliced salami and prosciutto but summer sausage and pepperoni are good options too.

Next add in your fruits. It's nice to have a decent variety of ones that mix well with what you're serving. Grapes and apples, blueberries and blackberries is what I added here but choose whatever works for you!

I like to fill in the crackers last. Different shapes and varieties help to make the board looks fun and full. If I have extra space, I like to fill it in with extra nuts like almonds just so it looks nice and full.

My last touch is usually to add a little fresh greenery and then I'm ready to serve! Give your guests plates and let them go to town filling it up with whatever catches their fancy!
